To me, leadership is all about being flexible, sharing passion, providing support and resources, maintaining accountability, and leading by example. I like to lay out basic expectations, get my team excited about a project, and leave it to their imaginations to see how far we can take it. To quote Gandhi, I believe that we need to "be the change that you want to see in the world."
I have demonstrated leadership in my involvements at the U of C through becoming involved heavily in the student club AMIO (the Association for the Management of Information and Operations). As the Vice President, Events of AMIO I have had the privilege of working with an amazing and diverse group of people. Together, we have learnt to tackle challenges that we had no idea about when we began. Together, we have met and exceeded each of our goals, and become a highly productive and close group of friends in the process.
I began my involvement in the U of C community with my life philosophy to try everything. This had led me to attending conferences, making friends and connections and becoming further involved in our community than only attending events.
In my time at the U of C, I have been involved through: organizing a 2 day Western Canadian student and professor conference on operations, raising funds through seeking corporate sponsorship for various events, organizing a focused career fair solely for Management Information Students (no, I am not one), coordinating and overseeing a Toy Mountain Fundraiser that raised the largest amount of funds for this charity through the U of C to date, organizing two industry night speaker events. I have also been involved in the UCL leadership program, been involved in the networking seminar series, lead a team of U of C students to volunteer at a safe house for women and children coming from abusing relationships, been involved in a coalition between all of the educational institutes in Calgary to organize a world-class event for both professionals and students through the Calgary Council for Advanced Technology.
My approach to academic and life success is to do everything. Take a class in everything, follow your friends to their classes in your breaks, take every opportunity to learn, travel everywhere and try everything. I'm not a textbook person. I learn by seeing, hearing, and doing. If you take all opportunities to learn, you'll be surprised where you end up applying your new knowledge. In the end, doing the work does help though!
Being a U of C student means opportunities to me. In my time at U of C, I've had so many opportunities, from meeting Presidents and Vice Presidents of prestigious firms to meeting politicians, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and new grads in positions I would potentially like to be in. Every day is a new opportunity to learn, make connections, and try things that will not be as readily available to you once you've graduated. Take advantage!
