Resume 101

How hard can it be to write a two page document? You’ve written 10+ page assignments on complex material so talking about yourself in a few bullet points should be quick and easy –right?  Resume writing seems simple until you write your first draft and try to highlight all of your skills and experience in a clear and concise manner.  Here are a few important things to remember that will help you stay on track.

  • Your resume is your first impression with employers – make it positive so you’re remembered for the right reasons.

  • Employers scan documents quickly so the information they need has to jump out to be noticed...don't clutter it with information you think they should know!
  • Targeting your information to fit the job is key but means a slightly different resume for each position.

  • Sections and titles should be clear but most importantly your content should be specific in describing your skills to show that you're right for the job.

  • Perfect grammar and spelling are a must.
